Monthly Meeting
Thursday, March 8, 2023: Mariana Kastrinakis on her Work
Mariana first explored watercolors during a break in her
medical career in the 1980’s. Over the years, she has
participated in multiple art shows and won several art
awards in watercolors. In the last five years, her work began
to incorporate acrylics and collage techniques. She has
studied in multiple venues, including the Corcoran School of
Art, the Maryland College of Art and Design, the Yellow Barn
at Glen Echo, as well as taking private instruction with many
well-regarded art teachers and mentors in the US.
She creates realistic and semi-abstract paintings and jewelry
that include making artful use of (or “upcycling”) discardable
materials.
Mariana's work reflects a fascination with the interaction
between light and natural elements, as well as the colors,
textures and patterns emanating from that interaction. Her
current paintings, collages and monoprints (gelatin plate
prints) make use of uniquely cut stencils, hand-carved
stamps as well as hand-painted and embellished tissue and
semitransparent papers.
Mariana has been the recipient of art awards and her work
has been displayed in many spaces in the Washington DC
metropolitan area. She also teaches watercolors, mixed
media and gelatin printing at her studio in Rockville. Her
works are held in private collections in the DC area as well
as in New York, Boston, and Greece, among other locations.
She appreciates your interest in her work and hopes you
enjoy viewing it as much as she enjoyed making it.
