THE GAITHERSBURG FINE ARTS ASSOCIATION was founded in 1976 as a small group of artists residing in Gaithersburg and has grown over the years to include members throughout Montgomery County. GFAA provides educational programs, promotional opportunities, multiple exhibits during the year, and outreach to local audiences.

Pauline Rakis — Chapter 3
The How and why of Becoming an Artist
Pauline writes: My paintings have an element of discovery. I may have an idea when I start working, but the painting can often take a different direction.
Acrylic paints are my preferred medium because of their flexibility. They can mimic watercolors with their fluidity or oil paint if applied thickly. Acrylics are easily manipulated which can add interesting
texture to the piece as well. For my collage, the fluid nature of acrylic paint is instrumental in coloring art tissue. Another method of tinting the tissue is to use
rusted items such as washers, nails and cans that have been sprayed with white vinegar. After spraying, the items are placed
on the tissue and allowed to drip onto the paper creating a variety of interesting shapes and colors.

This will be one category. PHOTOGRAPHY is a picture taken with a camera or phone, and possibly modified with digital software. DIGITAL ART is made with the use of software. AI generated art is not accepted and the copyright for the whole or any part of the artwork must belong to the artist!
